Poletaev’s work is a personal invitation to look at the world through the eyes of the artist. Take a stroll down a Parisian street, staring into the eyes of Audrey Hepburn, or get caught up in a passionate tango. The “Paganini” of the ballpoint pen will leave you in awe of the brilliance and skill of his art.

Award-winning works of art flow from one scene to the next, one-piece more captivating than the other. Andrey is no stranger to portraits or movement of the form either. Each work is meticulously drawn, contrasted shadow and nuances barely visible to the human eye escalate our understanding of realism to a brand new level. But, sometimes, the true artistry of Poletaev is best seen in what he doesn’t draw. For example, with the Snowy New York, he creates the ultimate optical illusion – the perception of something not there.

The artist continually refines his techniques and experiments with new mediums, expanding his portfolio exponentially with not just a ballpoint pen but graphite, oil, mixed methods, and watercolor imagery.

If you see his paintings’ results, you will be amazed and unable to believe that he only used a pen to make them. To achieve this incredible realism level, Poletaev applies up to tens of pen ink layers to the canvas and spends hundreds on a single painting.

“I’m trying to achieve the maximum optical illusion effect. I applied many different layers of ink and pen; a very light and long layer, densely applied to each other,” Andrey said.
