Impressionism is a painting style with more emphasis on the effect of light on the painting’s object. The rough but expressive texture of the paint is often found in images made using a pallet knife. The painting technique using a pallet knife does not produce artworks that are as smooth as the use of a brush. However, the results of expressive and colorful paintings are even more pronounced when using this technique. One of the faithful painters who use the pallet knife technique is Leonid Afremov. Artists born in Vitebsk, Belarus, who now live in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, claim to be in love with the method. In his hand, a combination of oil paint and pallet knife embodies a visually fantastic Artwork. “My artwork is the result of a long process. Every canvas is born during the work process. Every painting touches my most profound world, “he said as reported by the official website, afremov.com.

The painter, who is rated by the American Fine Art Association as one of the few influential painters in the world today, neatly combines bright paint colors and then carves it into a form of gradation in lighting. If you look at it, colorful gradations created by Afremov gave rise to a wet effect and typical reflection. Some curators and art experts argue that the painting technique is impossible to duplicate. Painting using a pallet knife does need to have special skills. It uses this tool to give texture and sweep flat areas with a single polish. He can also use Pallet blades to produce impasto techniques. This technique is known to coat the paint very thickly on the canvas to see the stroke. When the paint dries, the paint smeared with this technique will produce a clear texture so that the object’s figure looks real.

The style of French impressionism in the mid-19th century is a hallmark of Afremov’s painting. His paintings gained a strong influence from Russian artist March Chagall and Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. The effect was obtained when studying Art and graphics at the Vitebsk Education Institute. After graduating from college in 1978, he studied with local artist Ba Rowski, who had studied with Marc Chagall when the great artist lived in Vitebsk. His life in Russia turned out to be very hard. Being a citizen of Jewish descent earned him discrimination.

In the 1990s, Afremov and his family decided to cross into Israel. He hoped that he would get better treatment in his ancestral land while building a new life because his residence in Vitebsk was in an insecure zone due to the Chernobyl nuclear reactor’s terrible explosion. However, Goddess Fortuna was not on her side. Ironically, in her native land, she was labeled as a Russian immigrant whose painting prices were valued very low by art galleries. The behavior he got from the gallery hurt him, and he decided to sell his work door-to-door or sell it on the night market. This method proved to be effective, and the results of the sale of his paintings were quite decent. The humiliation he got from an art gallery in Israel made him one of the painters who directly sold his works.

Until now, Afremov is known as a painter who does not give third parties space to sell his paintings. From this new marketing system, gradually, the name Afremov has a place in art lovers’ hearts. He collected the money from the sale of paintings and then made capital to create a gallery in Ashdod in 1995. The gallery is quite well-known among Russian immigrants living in Israel. His two children are responsible for marketing and shipping paintings to customers around the world. A quiet life was not enjoyed too long. In 2001, Afremov’s gallery was forced to close because an irresponsible mass damaged it. The incident made him decide to move to the United States in 2002.

Unlike artists who do work based on personal experience. Hard life behavior due to political problems and discrimination experienced by Afremov did not appear in his career. His artwork is far from politics, let alone carve the hidden symbols in his paintings. Afremov is a painter who tells stories through drawings but paints the objects he sees. He often travels and presents many events and scenes through the lens of his camera.

The objects he painted include animals, humans, natural landscapes, cultural landscapes, families, jazz, solitude, and sad mood after rain. Every painting he produces is very personal, touching, and at the same time inspiring. Bright colors like yellow, orange, red, blue, white, and black gradations inscribed with a pallet knife are very strong to catch the eye.

He said, “Art was my life, and I painted every single day. It made me happy to see people enjoying my Art.”

“Every artwork was the result of The long paintings process; every canvas was born during the creative search; The paintings were full of my inner world. Each of my paintings brought different moods, colors, and emotions. I loved to express the beauty, harmony, and spirit of this world in my paintings,” He added.

But unfortunately, a Master Painter has passed away but left behind his extraordinary works that we can enjoy all the time, goodbye master, may God bless you… Rest In Peace…  Amen.
