That is not the clay or plastic figurine you usually find in toy fairs, but an elaborate food decoration by Zhou Yi. Zhou Yi is a master patissier known as the Sugar King. His specialty is creating intricately detailed food decorations out of fondant.

His passion isn’t making flowers, geese, or cute faces out of fondant. Zhou prefers intricate shapes like anime or manga characters. One of the most talented food decorators in China only uses fondant and food coloring to make shapes that are not even 1 cm in size. Anyway, all parts of the carvings must be edible. Zhou has won three gold medals and two bronze medals at the International Cake Competition at fairs in England, 2019. His works always include traditional Chinese elements. One of the most astonishing is Maharani Wu Zetian’s fondant sculpture. The cake decoration is so detailed, even down to the lashes.

His cake, entitled “Ladie in the Palace,” won the gold medal he had previously won. The figure referred to here itself is Wu Zetian. Wu Zetian is the First Female Emperor in China. This emperor was known to have awe-inspiring and dazzling beauty. And her beauty was successfully depicted by Zhou in a cake. Zhou’s cake looks like an incredibly detailed sculpture. Everything is formed in a very enchanting manner from the eyes, nose, mouth, hair, and skin.  A statue of Wu Zetian, the first and only female emperor, caught visitors’ attention. The edible sculptures Zhou made were so detailed that they could count Wu Zetian’s eyelashes.
